Smaje is a social scientist turned grower in Somerset. When he is not working the fields, he is thinking and writing about what a future food system might look like. For him switching out industrial meat for industrial alternative proteins is not the answer to the polycrises we face and he even wrote a book to critique George Monbiot’s book, Regenesis.
The Mint sought to explore with Smaje why his vision of local, low-energy farming systems had to be the future and what that might mean for humanity.
