A landmark legal case in Kenya is challenging the Seed and Plant Varieties Act, which criminalises the age-old practices of saving, sharing, and selling uncertified seeds. These laws prioritise commercial breeders’ intellectual property rights over farmers’ rights, threatening food sovereignty, agricultural biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

On the 27th of November 2025 Kenya’s High Court in Machakos will deliver judgement in  a landmark case that could reshape the country’s food system.
