Joanny has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Ottawa, specialised in comparative politics and in international relations, currently working as a research manager for the Canadian Bureau for International Education. Her current research interests are on the long-term impacts of investments and development projects in sub-Saharan Africa with a particular interest in the resilience effects of such development agendas on rural communities. She previously held a research position for the Quebec Foreign Service in Rabat, Morocco. She joined Utrecht University and LANDac as a postdoc between 2019 and 2022 to work on the operationalization of land investments in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with a specific interest in how local ties enable firms to overcome the cost of being foreign, and what kinds of local ties matter most. Her book, “Tanzania’s Land Rush – Impacts of the Farmland Investment Game“, based on her Phd research, was published in 2024.
